WHAT IS A BREAKTHROUGH JOURNAL?
“Hey, I’m not perfect,” a friend of ours used to joke. “I mean I would be, except that I’ve got this little chip in my tooth right here!”
Aren’t we all a little like this—we expect perfection from ourselves? And when we don’t get it (because every success has at least one small chip in it), we’re so busy fretting about the imperfection that we can’t really enjoy the success. Or we’re too scared about losing our edge to stop and give ourselves a pat on the back. Or we think that sprinting past a victory, pell mell toward the next hurdle, somehow makes us more “serious” professionals.
So we blow by our successes, but our failures? They’re another story. We put those under a microscope because we think we’ll learn something from them. We study them, read articles about them, and buy books that tell us how to avoid repeating them.
We’ve got it backwards!
It’s our successes—not our failures—that hold the secrets of our best work. If we put them under that same microscope, we see when, where, and how we excel. Then we can look for, or better yet, create those circumstances again in the future. And the result: more success.
So, imagine if, next time you had some hefty, high-fiving victory at work: a huge sale, a major breakthrough, or a promotion, you stopped, not just to celebrate, but to
brainstorm:
- “What did I do right? What specific actions did I take that led to this success?”
- “What other projects/ tasks/ goals can I apply these ideas to?”
- “How did I rely on my key relationships for this win…who helped me and how?”
- “How can I be sure the people who influence my future the most know about this achievement?”
- “What does this success tell me about my strengths?”
We call these The Great Questions.
What makes them so great? Their power to help you squeeze every insight out of your successes so you can enjoy them, celebrate them, and learn how to create more of them.
THE BREAKTHROUGH JOURNAL©
The main idea behind The Great Questions—that we grow best and fastest when we study our successes—is the heart of our Breakthrough Journals, a series of workbooks we created especially for people determined to reach new heights of success. Each of the seven Breakthrough Skills has its own Breakthrough Journal where you capture and study your successes in that particular skill.
In Part 1 of The Conflict Management Breakthrough Journal, A Fresh Start, you take a snapshot—a “before” picture—of your Conflict Management skills.
In Part 2: Breaking New Ground, you set yourself up for success by making decisions about the specific Conflict Management goals you want to reach.
Part 3: Soaring to New Heights, is the heart of this book where you shine a bright light on your Conflict Management successes. What steps did you take to create them? Who supported you? How did you involve these people? What does this success tell you about your strengths and potential? Who needs to know? How can you make sure they find out?
In many sections, we’ve given you real-life examples to spark your thinking.
Your successes are an absolute goldmine of information about your power and potential, and our Breakthrough Journals will let you zero-in on them and use what you learn to build the career or business of your dreams.
WE HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS EXCERPT OF THE CONFLICT MANAGEMENT BREAKTHROUGH JOURNAL. PLEASE DON’T LET THIS BE THE END! BE SURE TO GET YOUR COPY OF THIS POWERFUL RESOURCE FOR BUILDING YOUR NEXT CAREER OR BUSINESS BREAKTHROUGH!
