A multi-million dollar sales leader (ranked in the top 25 of his company’s 8,500 sales reps) on the secrets of his success: “I always let my clients know how much I enjoy my job. I actually say—even to the most senior business leader—“I love my job, and I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be here if you want to continue our conversation.” It sounds corny, but I’m absolutely sincere when I say this. My clients know I enjoy what I do, so they trust that I’ll to do it right. And, more to the point, people are naturally attracted to honesty and commitment. They want to be around it, so they want to be around me.”
What a delight it was to interview this powerful salesperson, a leader in his company and in his community where he sponsors a number of youth programs and community reinvestment projects.
The interview was filled with vitality and inspiration…all around a central theme of energizing his success by nurturing a deeply positive outlook on his work and his potential to contribute. At number 24 out of the 8,500 sales reps in his company, clearly he’s doing something very right. “I enjoy the process as well as the success I generate in my work,” he said. “I take great pleasure in building the relationships that eventually lead to the sales.”
Could it be that the secret of success has been staring at us all from childhood: have fun and don’t hesitate to let others know that you are. You clinch success more readily and more surely when you take joy in the process.

Recall specific moments when you experienced genuine enjoyment at work. When are you at your best, delivering the highest value to your team and/or company? What steps can you take to generate more of these moments? What words and actions will convey your enthusiasm and competence to internal and external customers.
